Alexis Hoots is an outlet for writing about what I love. One day I wanted to inspire girls like me and create a place where they could come and find help to their problems. This blog will focus on how to navigate life while at college. Being a collegiate can be overwhelming so welcome to your go-to-guide. You’ve come to the right place, beautiful! Can’t wait to bring you along on the ride and show you how much fun is in store for you!!
Let’s get to know the girl behind the blog..
Hi, my name is Alexis M. Martin. I’m a 21 y/o girl currently attending Rutgers University majoring in Criminal Justice and a minor in Sociology. In life, I’ve learned 2 very important rules.
Rule #1: Never let the opinions of others define who you are..
As humans we are all born with things we can’t change. For me, it was my big eyes, gap teeth, and terrible vision. I remember a girl saying I reminded her of an owl because my eyes were so big. For so long, I was bullied for my gap. My teeth were a “parking garage” and I was considered “four eyes”all throughout middle school. I remember wishing I was different and if someone asked me what I didn’t like about myself I always knew exactly what to say. I let the opinions of others shape who I was. I started believing that I wasn’t pretty, cool, likable because of the unpopular opinions of others. I remember in sixth grade begging my parents for braces and contacts. Looking back on that I find it so silly. I tried to change myself in order to feel accepted.
Rule #2: To be yourself in a world that is constantly trying to make you something else is the greatest accomplishment.
Today the girl pictured above is so confident and secure within herself that the opinions of others does not faze her. I am so thankful that I found a way to love all my flaws and embrace them. Without those experiences I wouldn’t know the importance of self love. I can’t stress how important loving yourself is. When it all boils down to it you come first. Never think that you are not pretty enough, smart enough, popular enough because you are you. That in itself is your greatest power. We are all crafted differently because a world where everyone is the same would be pretty boring. Don’t you think?
To the girl who said I looked like an owl in middle school thanks for that. You’ve helped create Alexis Hoots. Owls have become my spirit animal. The owl is very wise and has the ability to see what’s usually hidden to most. When the spirit of the owl guides you, you can see the true reality, beyond illusion and deceit. Offering inspiration and guidance necessary to deeply explore the unknown and the magic of life.
You are all owls. Wise, beautiful, and everything and more. This blog is meant to be a reassurance of that. A space where you can come and escape from whatever is your going through and read about my own life, get advice, find health/ fitness tips, etc. I’m so glad your here!
